This study conducts a comprehensive bibliometric and qualitative comparison of two leading green building certification systems, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), covering peer-reviewed literature indexed in SCOPUS from 2010 to April 2025, in order to map their conceptual networks, thematic clusters, and evolving research trajectories.” A two-tier methodology combined macro-level bibliometric analysis with micro-level qualitative synthesis. All 4,813 peer-reviewed articles retrieved from SCOPUS using a fixed Boolean search string were analyzed with VOSviewer to construct keyword co-occurrence networks, author collaboration networks, and geographic distribution maps, while a secondary subset of highly relevant, high-impact studies was reviewed qualitatively to interpret the quantitative findings. LEED and BREEAM, despite sharing a commitment to energy efficiency, are structurally differentiated in conceptual orientation: LEED anchors itself in building-scale performance optimization, while BREEAM gravitates toward lifecycle integration and systems-level sustainability. Certification frameworks need to evolve from static compliance mechanisms into adaptive, evidence-based instruments that prioritize measurable performance, contextual relevance, and social equity, with the Global South's underrepresentation and weak longitudinal post-certification verification flagged as priorities for future research.
